acrylic and wax- compatibility problems

Mixed Media Art Questions

Hi Milliande,

I've studied and studied and read and read books, etc. You tube. I've begun my collage, mixed media paintings, etc.

but still can't seen to resolve this issue. Is is ok to use bee's wax over an acrylic collage or painting???
I see them for sale on eBay. I read that you can't use wax and acrylic and yet...there they are.
Thanks so much for your help. I'm so ready to get heavily into this art form but am holding back because of this issue.

Mixed Media Art Questions answered by Milliande

That is indeed an interesting topic, here seem to be lots of dividing opinions flying around as to the suitability of using acrylic paints underneath a mixed media collage that is to be treated with beeswax on top

From what I understand essentially the two dont like being near each other...the acrylic reacts with the beeswax which can result in the painting cracking or aging..

Some people work around that fact by creating a fully finished painting first...then sealing the acrylic mixed media painting with a layer of glaze matte vanish ... thus preventing direct access to the acrylic... whne this is left to dry and cure properly BEFORE the beeswax or encaustic medium is applied on top a better compatibility can be achieved..

Personally I do not have much experience with either technique, having only dabbled in it myself...

So I am putting in out here for anyone to chip in with a comment if they have some ideas and personal experiences about working with acrylic and beeswax in combination ?? feel free to leave a comment

hope this helps
