What inspired and what challenged you the most about the artwork of Joan Miro?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I was inspired by a particular Mirò painting of the donkey on a farm. I like it because of it's movement, the earthy colours and the clever use of vertical and horizontal lines. It also looks like a homely place to live.
Art Materials' used:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Acrylic paints
black pen
printed images

Which artists would you like to see featured in our art prompts?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I would like to see Lord F.Leighton, John William Waterhouse,Edward Gorey and Frida Kahlo.
I like the similar styles of Leighton and Waterhouse and I also like mythology. I chose Frida Kahlo, because I am drawn to the boldness and strength that comes through in some of her paintings.
Edward Gorey, I discovered not long ago. His sketches have amazing details and texture, and I like his black humour.
Art Supplies Used:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I used black sharpie pen, and red acrylic paint, and watercolour for the background. I found that when creating i knew I wanted to draw something that incorported more than one object, as you see from my many faces. I think Joan miro does this best.

Which Artist would you like to see featured in our Art Journal Prompts ?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I would like to see Salvador Dali featured, he was a artist of many talents, not just painting, photograpy etc. He was an abstract painter that loved colour.
What inspired and what challenged you about Joan Miros Artworks ?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I was inspired to work in a totally different style, to anything I ever do. I find it diffecult, good to try out , get my brain in a different gear, but do not enjoy it!

I know its healthy to be shaken now and then......:-) I did think of cave paintings, and know that Mirò himself were inspired that way, looked at his painting "Women, Bird and Moonlight, and this is what came out, not a lovely native painting, but a "A Boy And His 3 Pets!"

Art supplies Used:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I used Gesso, then acrylic paint, black and white pens.
Which artist would you like to see featured in an art journal prompt?
I would love to see ROTHKO Mark featured. I love his paintings, the blurred edges and rectangular blocks of intense colour.
Which artist would you like to see featured in one of our art prompts?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Jim Dine is an artist I would like to see featured.

He is an American, born in 1935 he is famous for his Pop Art.

He uses mixed media and later incorporated collage, printing, etching and paper making a lot of which we embrace in our art journals. Valentines day is approaching and I thought that perhaps we could be inspired by his famous 'Heart' paintings!

What inspired and what challenges you about Joan Miro's artwork?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I had to do an emergency lemon picking late at night before they were damaged by the frost. This is my recording of the incident.
I love the colors Miro uses in most of his paintings. I have greater respect for Miro's work now that I've tried to create something in his style. I'm not pleased with this (especially the composition), but it was a great learning experience.
Art Supplies Used:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I used Pitt pens, Inkadinkado Blending Chalks, and acrylic paint.

What inspired and challenged you about the artwork of Joan Miro ?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Even though the piece I chose, La Poetesse, looked like a doodle the more I got into the process the more I realized Miro had incorporated a set of "doodle-rules" if I can call them that...which I found fascinating. The rules were, whenever a shape is split by a line one half must be black the other colored. Whenever a shape is intersected by another shape...yep, same rule...one half must be black the other colored.
I found this totally absorbing. I love relationships in nature that can cross over to art like the "rule of thirds", the golden rule", etc. I wish they were not called rules as these concepts are birthed in nature and are absolutely fascinating to me! Even within the freewheeling form of Miro he has incorporated geometry by dividing objects into halves and thirds.
To be honest, I did not go into this prompt with a positive state of mind as his art did not appeal to me at first sight. BUT...a funny thing happened...I gained a new appreciation of Miro's work...who would have guessed?!
Art supplies used:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Bic Mark Its in various colors, Tim Holtz distressing ink to color ground and edges.

Which Artist I would like to see featured in an art prompt and why?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Tony Tascona, a Canadian artist who produced wonderful work until shortly before his death in 2006.
“What to me does art mean today? Art has always meant to me that a certain magic takes place, a transformation and elevation through either the construction or the destruction of an idea. ... Art deals with research and experimentation. For me, to do art is like riding along the edge of a precipice. In my work excitement and experience result from the embodiment of ideas in the process of bringing about constructive change.”
What inspired and what challenged you about the artwork of Joan Miro?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I loved this challenge. The playfulness of a lot of Miro's works is what inspired me.

There were many ideas percolating around in my head, but then my 2 year old granddaughter Lily came to spend the night. Lots of playing then! So this piece is called LilyBug.

For some reason Lily got nicknamed pretty much as soon as she came home from the hospital. She got stuck with LilyBug and that always makes me think of Ladybugs. That's where I ended up. There may be more than one because the ideas are still in there rattling around.

What challenged and what inspired you about Joan Miro's artwork ?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I didn't really find Miro's work inspiring, but it looked easy and my husband had just been in the hospital. It was a horrible experience, so I wanted to do this cartoon to get my frustration out and to cheer him up a little. Note the red tape, deluge of paper-work, loud alarm on the IV pump, bored nurse, and the prison bars depicting the difficulty of escaping the whole mess. ;)
Art Supplies used:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Marker on 9x12 Bristol board, details with black gel pen, India ink wash on background, followed by a coat of acrylic gloss gel medium. Prison bars in India ink, over-all wash of India ink.

This was too dingy so I quickly washed some of it off with a wet paper towel. Not happy with the nurse's face. Added oil pastel to try to even out the color -- marginally successfully. Brightened up some colors with markers again. Heated the oil pastel with hair dryer to set it. The water wash damaged the prison bars, so I redid them with some left-over India ink wash, then with marker because it wasn't dark enough. Matte acrylic medium over everything. Not sure whether I'm finished yet, but here it is for now. :)

What artists would you like to see featured in one of our art prompts ?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I really liked Klimt artwork one of the other ladies posted. It would be fun to try something of that line, but I'm not sure where exactly to start. This Miro artwork seemed very straight-forward, though I'm sure I would find it much more complex and interesting if I had the opportunity to see some of his original work. It's difficult to depict artwork even in a high quality print, let alone on an internet page, so I don't want to judge what I haven't really seen.
What inspired and what challenged you about the artwork of Joan Miro ?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

here is a peek at my process ~ the muse needed ample 'think' time to process miro and his work.

i find miro's fantastical humour hiding deeper intention interesting.

i am intrigued by the intentions and politics of miro and his contemporaries. i like the stab at the establishment, the reference to world change in the futuristic voice and the primitive childlike quality of his work.

his monsters and creatures are wonderful! it was a new way of 'seeing' and a new way of making 'art' (painting specifically). i love the ambiguous spaces and twists of perspective miro creates and has his creatures inhabit.

i also really like miro's colour field paintings (i will have to play with this inspiration too).

i found it challenging to maintain an ambiguous space within my narrative. i am interested in further exploring the 'doodle-like' drawing over the flattened space and the use of black lines to shift perspective.

Art Supplies Used
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
i used acrylic paints, black ink, white and black markers.
What inspired and what challenged you about the artwork of Joan Miro ?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

After finishing the first page I was looking forward to using some techniques which added some depth. That was the easy part! I found this challenge to be a curious mix of letting go and tightening up - no wonder I struggled with it. However, in the end I got there.

I discovered that filling in large areas with a black Vivid pen wasn't a good idea when gessoing over the top - it all turned blue. Then I couldn't use my white gel pens over the top as they also turned blue. So you'll notice some weird colouring in here and it's all to do with that ... o well, could be a happy accident?

So,

What inspired and what challenged you about Joan Miros artwork?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I felt completely challenged by Joan Miro's artwork ... I do not usually work a lot in bright colors, especially with a focus on primary colors....nor do I enjoy the sort of linear anglar style often found in his more abstract work ...
However I love being able to take from an artist an inspiration ..even the smallest one and play against my boundaries to see where it takes me ... I love his spirals... I like exploring his relationships between geometric form and design elements .... I like some of his fragmented composition and perceived motion ... and found myself playing ...
What inspired and what challenged you about Joan Miro's artwork ?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I love the simplicity and the bold colors. The childlike playfulness is fun and yet invites further investigation.

There is a sense of freedom and abandon in his pieces. It was interesting to try to work in that concept. A first I tried to think of something beforehand and then draw it. Didn't work too well. So I just drew shapes and the piece took on a life of its own.

Art Supplies Used
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I drew the shapes with a pigma brush pen (in purple - my personal playful color!) and then filled in the shapes with acrylic paints.
The title of the piece came to me just before it was completed. The very long arms of the person at the top right of the page embracing all the varied bits around her.
It is called The Embrace - or in Spanish to honor Joan Miro - El Abrazo.
I am inspired by the childlike ways of randomness and the colors.
The challenge for me was to try hard not to "fix it", if that makes sense.
My supplies were lined journal pages
left over acrylic paint from other projects spread with a sponge brush
Permanent color markers
Painted pages in purple and red on lined journal pages
What inspired and what challenged you about the artwork of Joan Miro ?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I did not know Joan Miro. His type of art is not my style. I was inspired by his use of color. When I looked at his work and read the titles, then, they made sense. I was inspired by The Ballerina. I did this in honor of my grandaughter's cheerleading and all their stunts.

I was challenged because I do not draw like this. I went with it and found it to be fun. Every time I think a project will be difficult I end up really liking it. Funny?
