Beginner's supply list for Art Journaling

Mixed Media Art Questions for Milliande

Hello! I've just started mixed media art journaling - with a special fondness for watercolors - and would like to know what supplies I need to get started. Would you post a basic supply list for the beginner (who's on a fixed income)?

Mixed Media Art Questions answered by Milliande

Art Journaling can be as involved or a simple as one chooses it to be

Mixed Media Art Journaling or traditional sketchbook journaling are all used by many artists .

I think a good investment is a good quality art journal if you are going to be using watercolors as often the thinner papers do not take watercolor easily and either buckle or seep through ..

On a budget in might pay to make your own watercolor art journal by purchasing watercolor paper in large sheets and cutting them down to your preferred size.

Watercolor come in both paints and pen format , for working in an art journal one does not need to have high quality pigments as the artwork is not going to be exposed to light like a painting hanging on the wall would, so money can be saved there.

I like the versatility of watercolor crayons ( neocolor watersoluble crayons) as they can be both used as a bold crayon as well as with a brush as a watercolor ... neocolor crayons can be purchased in small starter sets, or any larger art store may carry them to buy individually too ... many mixed media art journalers love them , an so one gets the best of both worlds.

A couple of good journaling pens ( I like faber castell artist pens, or prismacolor drawing pens for fine detail)

That is all that is really needed to get started ... if you like collage add a good gluestick to the mix and you are set ..

A lot of printmaking tools for backgrounds can be made from recycled materials, bubblewrap, paper trays, tubberbands, leafs etc.. so a simple permanent inkpad may come in handy too

So

A good art journal paper
a few watercolor crayons
a gluestick
a couple of journaling pens
a brush

and a good dose of imagination :-)
