copyright Issues using magazines in collage and acrylic transfers
I have gathered numerous pictures from magazines expecting to do transfers and use in my mixed media. I have been told that to use these images in my art is a legal violation.
Your thoughts on this please.

Hi , and thanks for your questions
There are many schools of thought as to what is acceptable and what is not ..
As a general rule of thumb ..if you use magazine images and copyrighted images found on the web .. to create artwork for personal use ..that is deemed acceptable
If however the Art created with such images is to be sold for profit, displayed in a gallery for profit etc then copyright issues can arise if permission by the owner of the image has not been given
Some artists take it , that if magazine images are altered beyond recognition, like in altered acrylic transfers where only fragments of the original image remain, that that is acceptable for artwork that is to be sold .
Most people who sell their artwork source copyright free images to use in acrylic transfers or collage ... Artists who play for their own pleasure use any available print materials freely
Hope that explains it a little ..maybe others can chip in with their views ...
