Is it normal for gel medium to stay a little tacky? I have been using Jo sonias so its a pretty good brand? Should I have used a varnish or other medium over it to prevent the sticky comments!? LOL
Thanks for any info :)

Hi Marcy

and thanks for your question

~ I find that it depends on the type of gel medium used

~ I am not familiar with the jo sonia brand of gelmedium although I have used her acrylic paint

~ I mainly used Golden Gel medium ..and have found that depending on whehter it is matte or soft gel medium, gloss or semi ..the all have slightly different drying times

~ different acrylic gel mediums also react different to humidity ...If I work in winter in my garden art studio .. the gel medium reacts differently to when i create my art in summer..when it dires faster and does not tend to be so sticky ...

~ I find that also it depends on how thick the gle medium is applied... for a thin layer to cover lets say a mixed media paper collage... if applied with a flat brushed, then i uses golden matte medium and it dires pretty even and non tacky ..

~ If however I use soft gel medium for a gel medium transfer.. then the stickyness or tackiness of the gle medium actually helps to adhere the acrylic transfer from the paper to the gel .

~ I think in the end it is about finding the right medium that suits your purpose, what you are trying to achieve in your artwork etc ...

~ if you have any more questions... feel free to me more specific and i will try my best to help

Jo Sonja gel medium
by: Anonymous

I have used the JoSonja gel medium, mentioned in earlier posts. Jo Sonja gel medium gives the artist more "open time" to work with their paint, which is gouche acrylic. That explains the tackiness. I love their paints because of their versatility. Jo Sonja is made by Chroma.

answers...keep em coming!

Thanks guys your answers are really great ...keep em coming! I am using a gloss gel medium to seal art journals, collage and altered book covers. It is summer here and even leaving them out in the 40+ deg day doesnt seem to dry away the tackiness. I dont know if that is "right" thing to use but I like the look. I am guessing most of the time, as out here in the country, I am my own teacher most of the time. I guess this is where communities like this are an valuable tool!Thankyou for any and all info! :)

Gloss vs matte
by: Geraldine

Gloss medium is usually more 'tacky' than matte.
Are you using it on top of paper or as a glue? If on top of paper I would recommend you use the matte.

Artist Statement

I am intriqued by the notion of universal consciousness and choose to peek closely at the small particles that make up existence.

Human and living form cell biology, the interplay of microcosm and macrocosm, quantumphysics and the spiritual connection to the Self all nurture me with an endless stream of inspiration.

The female form and its nature of being, the beauty of motherhood, viewing the world in fragments rather than wholes and the palpable energy exchange and communication between them are central themes in my artwork.

I enjoy making the invisible visible and creating openended visual artworks that invite the viewer to explore deeper within their own layers of perception.

Contemporary Mixed media art techniques provide a rich playground for my artistic impulses and allow room for an individual approach to the multilayered facets of my artwork.
