Does anyone in this group do freeform knitting? I'm wondering how to go about it. Seems like there's alot of books and information on the Internet about freeform crochet, but I haven't had much luck in finding information on freeform knitting. Any suggestions?
Thank you! Rachel

I love freefrom knitting but then to combine it with crochet at the same time ... I have a book by Jenny Dowde, Freeform Knitting and Crochet that focusses on freeform knitting ( there is a second one on transformations which is good too the purple /turquoise on on the pictures) and it covers a lot of projects ..
I tend to just start with knitting .. usually working on 2 needles, then I put some of the knitting stiches to rest either on a needle holder or on a seperate knitting kneedle( I work a lot with sockneedle sets) ... then I will pick up some of the stitches with my crochet needle, usually turning the piece of work around and working in an angle away from where my knitting started ...
I might do a few odd stitches switch yarn, switch stitch type and cast off a few stitches too ...
Sometimes I cast off an entire piece .. only to pick up some knitting stitches again elseweere...
I dont think there are really any hard a fast rules ..hence the name freeform knitting...it is more of a play and see where it leads me.... I often change knitting needle sizes as well ..ending up with large lace like effects etc ...
I tend to work very small to start with however... I love using the finished pieces in my mixed media art fibre work, often incorporating them with my needlefelting :-)
I will take a final piece and cast it off ..place it on a felt base and then incorporate raw fibres, leftover bits of vintage lace, threads, etc to run it through my needlefelting machine ...
Another fun way of doing freeform knitting is to start of with a piece of felt ..I often use a wool sweater /jumper run it through a washingmachine in a hot cycle until it felts ... then I cut a random shape out of the newly felted wool ... and start casting on some knitting stiches ..or often also crochet edge patterns first .. where i can pick up knitting stitches later ...
It really is a playful form of knitting where anything goes..the wilder the better
