Mixed Media Art Questions

Journal collaging - Suitable Mediums for Journaling over ?

i have taped down magazine pieces to a painted journal and would like to know if i can coat them with a decoupodge glue, or yes glue , or a gel medium and then be able to draw, paint, water color or zentangle on top of what i coated the magazine pieces with?

Magazine Collage pieces can be glued to an art journal and then over-coated with a variety of gel mediums or decoupage glues.. but many will interfere with certain types of art journaling pens by clogging up their nibs with the residue left over from the gel medium or glue.

It is advisable to leave any gel medium, or modge podge glue to dry thoroughly before journaling over it .

Many art journalers have found that Sharpie pens work well, as well as other permanent, bold tipped journal pens, often filled with alcohol based inks rather than waterbased .

Other art journaling materials for writing over collaged art can be crayons, oil crayons, paint pens, Tim Holtz fillable pens that can be used to fill with permanent ink to then write with into your art journal.

Watercoloring over glued collage or gelmedium is difficult as watercolor paint per se needs an absorbant surface/ paper to sink into however the glue / gel medium over the art journal collage turns it into a non-absorbant surface ..

Another option is to use gel pens -- some brands well over certain gel mediums/ glues-- it is a case of playing and testing with what is locally available to you. Not all gel pens work but some work fine.

hope this helps...
