Mixed Media Art Question - hole in my pocket

by Chris
(Seattle)

When we were kids we memorized this poem, There's a hole in my pocket, by a little boy. It was something like .....there's a hole and there's a string
and once I had a XXX ring
and through a hole I lost it one day...
and this is what I always say
A hole's the worst thing in a pocket
be sure to mend it when you got it.

Do you know this poem? I am off on a few of the lines and do not know the author. I am looking desperately for it.

Thanks for any help,

Hi,

I am afraid I do not know who the author of this poem is ... I had a search around google but nothing seems to come up either ..

Maybe it was an old children's rhyme that was handed down .. but I personally have never heard it ..
It might be worth searching for " hole in pocket saying" , " hole in pocket rhyme" .. etc ...

Sorry I cant be of anymore help ...

I've Got It!
by: Carla

I remember that poem from when I was a child! My dad would read it to us with a lispy kind of accent. All my siblings and I have very fond memories of it, and located it again some years ago so we could recite it to the nieces and nephews. I have some parts of it memorized from more than 40 years ago.

It starts like this: Do you know what's in my pottet? Such a lot of treasures in it. Listen now while I bedin it. Such a lot of sings it holds. And every thing that's in my pottet, and how and where and when I dot it.

Anyway, I googled the first two lines and came up with this page whose first two listings lead to the poem. I didn't realize it was so old! One version is from the 1800's and slightly different than the one we learned. The other has some typos in it but sounds more like the one I remember.

Here's the link:

Enjoy! It was such fun to see your question on Milliande's wonderful site and know that I could help someone reunite with this fun poem.

Hole in My Bucket?
by: Jody

That was the first thing that came to my mind, also, was a song I knew as a child. I found this version with lyrics on wikipedia, but nothing closer so far. I hope this helps!

Maybe?
by: Trish

It sounds similar to "Hole in My Pocket/Bucket dear Eliza/Liza". The words change depending on where you are from I think. Sometimes it says "I had a ring but lost it" others it is a "dime".

Artist Statement

I am intriqued by the notion of universal consciousness and choose to peek closely at the small particles that make up existence.

Human and living form cell biology, the interplay of microcosm and macrocosm, quantumphysics and the spiritual connection to the Self all nurture me with an endless stream of inspiration.

The female form and its nature of being, the beauty of motherhood, viewing the world in fragments rather than wholes and the palpable energy exchange and communication between them are central themes in my artwork.

I enjoy making the invisible visible and creating openended visual artworks that invite the viewer to explore deeper within their own layers of perception.

Contemporary Mixed media art techniques provide a rich playground for my artistic impulses and allow room for an individual approach to the multilayered facets of my artwork.
