For awhile, I was unable to see any comments here on this post. I was alerted that it had comments, but they weren't visible until now. :) I would love to see your friend's work too, is there a website where I can see them?
This is my website, http://twistedthicket.com which has links to my blog and also to the two venues where I sell my work. It is in the midst of being updated. You can see closeups of some of the pieces that are on the website, on either of the two venues I listed on my website's front page.
Painting on a gourd is pretty much the same as on any other surface. You can use gesso too, especially to help bring out the lighter colors, since a gourd's natural color is more of a tan or light brown. What type of painting would you be most likely to do?
Here are two articles I wrote for Empty Easel on gourd basics and preparation:
I've been meaning to put a list of my articles on my blog, maybe I'll be able to get to that today. :)
Talk to you soon,
Kim

GourdsNEW by: Kim
Hi Milliande,
Gourds, once dried, have to be cleaned of dirt, mold, and dead skin, but once they are cleaned, their surface is very much like wood and can accept just about any medium you can think of. They are an artist's dream canvas! :)
I wrote a couple articles on preparing gourds just recently, if you'd like to read them or just talk with me about gourds, let me know, I'm happy to help.

I love the idea of natural canvasses.. the gourds look great ...does one have to do anything special to them to prepare their surface for painting ?
Are they are special type of gourd that is most suitable for artwork ?
Love the idea of airbrushing... something i have tried with simple stencils but always admirred the larger , layered artworks ..
