Mixed Media Art Questions answered by Milliande

~ I tend to use spray fixative for fixing pages like that ... look out for a colorless fixative that has a transparent non glossy effect and literally just seals the pastel colors, watercolors or charcoal in without altering the actual design in your art journal page

~ Then I would always apply a topcoat of spray fixative...and even spray varnish either matte or gloss as desired to increase the longelvity of the piece. .

~ when choosing any kind of fixative or varnish it pays to look out for archival products ( archival meaning preventing yellowing and cracking over age)

~ Watercolors can also be sealed with a spray varnish ... a thin coat of archival spray varnish can give a luster effect to the colors of watercolor as well

~ But with watercolors that are meant for display You're fine without sealing them. Watercolors then to be displayed behind glass as opposed to acrylic or oil painting on canvas .. Watercolor the color is stable but will fade when exposed to direct sunlight.

~ Golden also manufactures a product that is UV resistant varnish..One could seal the watercolor painting with a coat of spray fixative and then add a coat of archival uv varnish if it is meant to be displayed ..

hope this helps
