Spray Sealer for Mixed Media Painting
Mixed Media Art Questions for Milliande
I have a mixed media project that needs protection from outside environmental enemies.
It's a combination of oil paint and standard copy/print paper with various images printed upon it.
I need a good sealer that will protect the images and not smudge them or take too long to dry and will not cause the paint to look dull.
Can you help?
Thanks!

Hi Heather
different paints react differently to various kinds of sealants ..
I use a spray sealant usually iver a watersoluble artwork .. ie if I used watercolor paints or watersoluble crayons /pencils etc where there is a risk that a brush on varnish or sealant is going to smudge.
In that case I use a sealant that is designed for to fix pastels .. so more of a fixative than a sealant . The reason is that I only want to fix the paint in place before I apply a varnish or sealant .
There are a wide variety of sealants and varnishes on the market ..each with different effects... one can choose form gloss varnish, semi gloss to matte.
The Company Golden also manufactures a brush on varnish that contains a UV protective agent , thus providing protection from sunlight .
As far as I know traditional Oilpaint usually does not requite much of a sealant ... however I am not an expert there.
in Mixed Media Projects where oil crayons or oil paint is used as well ..one has to wait before the oilpaint elements is thoroughly dried ( which can take weeks) before applying any sealant ... then also choose a varnish that is compatible with oilpaint if that is the main ingredient .
Hope this helps
Golden produces a variety of videos on thir website, might be worth a look
Good luck
